Blooming Roses Childcare: Two August Spots Now Open

Blooming Roses Childcare: Two August Spots Now Open

Good news for local families — Blooming Roses Childcare Ltd., our licensed childcare provider right here at the community centre on Mills St, has two openings this August for children ages 3 and up.

Blooming Roses offers a warm, nurturing multi-age program led by caring Early Childhood Educators, with plenty of hands-on discovery through art, sensory play, and outdoor exploration in our centre’s playground. It’s a wonderful example of the kind of community-based programming we love hosting under our roof.

Spots are limited and fill quickly, so if you’re looking for licensed care for your little one this fall, reach out soon.

Parksville Community Centre Society June 6 and 27, 2026 Pop-up Recycling Depot Reports

June 6, 2026 Pop-up Recycling Depot Report: Brought to you by Parksville Community Centre Volunteers!

June 6th was another successful day at the PCCS Pop-up Recycling Depot with Barb Kenedy at the helm. The styrofoam tent was filled to its usual capacity of 18 sacks, The C-cans and tent were all full with the usual 74 sacks, and we added another 14 sacks outside, which means we took in about 106 Super Sacks of material that isn’t in the landfill today.  These materials were delivered to us in 615 vehicles driven by  our appreciative customers.

The morning was soggy, but then just after 10:00 AM the sun came out and we finish the day with sunshine!  The volunteers enjoyed some Tim Hortons coffee, Pizza and Girl Guide cookies, but we ran out of bottled water (Sorry about that).  The bad news on this day is that all the left behind granola bars got eaten by a not-so friendly group of rodents, which left our volunteers without those tasty morsels.  The lesson learned, no food should be left there in the future.  The rats got into the grey plastic totes and scattered what they didn’t eat all over the lunchroom tent.

As always, we’re hugely appreciative of the Girl Guides who attend all the PCCS Pop-up Recycling Depots with their good humour, energy and hard work.  Our sincere appreciation goes out to their leaders who support their efforts while raising the funds needed for them to undertake some of the life-changing Girl Guide activities and events.

Thx, Albert

June 27, 2026 Pop-up Recycling Depot Report: Brought to you by Parksville Community Centre Volunteers!

On June 27, 2026 the PCCS Volunteers were lead by Don Tolson upon his return from his European vacation, and we welcomed 691 vehicles that brought a record breaking 148 Super Sacks of Recycling material.

We enjoyed a mostly sunny day with good people, fun stories, good food and just enough shade for those working under the tents.  The Parking Lot volunteers though worked all day in the sunshine, so our hats go off to them for taking one for the team.  (Did you see what I did there; hats, shade?)  I also want to commemorate all the volunteers who worked exceptionally hard to take in those 148 Super Sacks of material, and the customers who sat in long line-ups before getting to our gates.

The styrofoam volunteers did a record 28 sacks, and the rest of the C-cans and tent that were filled with their usual 74 sacks of cardboard/paper, soft and crinkly plastic and glass were filled before 11:00 AM, which forced us outside to the board walk where we stacked up an additional 46 sacks of material by day’s end.  I’ve never experienced this much material at the PCCS Pop-up Recycling Depots, although I’ve heard reports of a January 2025 event that took in 150 sacks while experiencing an Atmospheric River.

Now, let’s have a drum roll please for the winner of the vehicle count lottery that I instituted as a result of the 3-week break we had between the June 6th and 27th events.  The participants were, Connie P (700), Pam M (638), Gerry V (575) and Albert R (558).  The rules were that the winner would be the one who guessed the closest without going over the number on John Bishop’s counter, which he reported as being 691.  I declare Pam M as our winner for staying under the total, and Connie P gets honourable mention for actually being closest but having gone over by 9 lousy vehicles.  LOL.  I’ll supply a box of Girl Guide cookies to Pam at the next Pop-up event.

Also, thank you Brenda for the very much appreciated sandwiches, and to the Girl Guides for their ongoing volunteer support and cookies.

The rest of 2026 will see us operating Recycle Depots as follows:

July 11 and July 25

August 8and August 22

*Three week break;

September 12 and September 26

October 10, Thanksgiving Weekend and October 24

November 7 and November 21

December 5 and December 19

Thx, Albert

Pop-up Recycle Depot Report for April 11, 2026 held at 1080 Industrial Way in Parksville

On April 11 the Parksville Community Centre Pop-up Recycling Depot Volunteers welcomed 556 vehicles and walk-in customers who dropped off some 112 Super Sacks of material that isn’t in the landfill today.  It seems with us having a three week break between events has increased the material Oceanside residents accumulated.  Thank goodness for sunshine and hard working volunteers.

While all of that was going on, we had some of our Girl Guide Pathfinder volunteers sing us a song they wrote for Earth Day.  Check our Facebook Page to listen to it.

National Volunteer Week 2026

If you’ve ever been to an event at the Parksville Community Centre and thought, “This all runs so smoothly,” we have a small confession: it’s not magic—it’s volunteers.

During National Volunteer Week, we celebrate the people who arrive early, stay late, and keep everything running with care, humour, and more than a little caffeine. They set up rooms, welcome guests, solve problems on the fly, and create the warm, inclusive atmosphere our community is known for.

They’re also behind the scenes preparing and serving countless meals, snacks, and cups of coffee—making sure no one leaves hungry and everyone feels at home. And when the event winds down, their work continues, sorting and saving an impressive amount of recycling so it stays out of the landfill. It’s not glamorous, but it’s deeply meaningful.

Our volunteers are the heart of this Centre. They bring people together, strengthen connections, and quietly make Parksville a better place every single day.

So to every volunteer: thank you. Your generosity, energy, and community spirit do not go unnoticed—they make all the difference.

(And yes, we’ll keep working on that steady coffee supply.)

With heartfelt gratitude,
The Parksville Community Centre

Vancouver Coastal Health’s bio-medical detection dogs: Canines 4 Care team in Parksville on Good Friday 2026.

Canines 4 Care (C4C) was founded in 2016 and became the first program in the world to operationalize canine scent detection for identifying bacterial reservoirs of Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) within health-care environments. C. difficile is the leading cause of acute infectious diarrhea in hospitals and long-term care facilities across North America. More than 60% of cases are acquired within health-care settings. The C4C program is designed to reduce C. difficile transmission by strengthening environmental surveillance, increasing staff engagement, improving infection prevention practices, and minimizing environmental contamination. Canine teams can detect bacterial reservoirs in locations that are frequently missed during standard environmental audits. These screenings provide a rapid, non-invasive method for assessing health-care environments for C. difficile. Currently, no other testing modality offers the same combination of precision, speed, and accuracy. The Canines 4 Care team is led by a multidisciplinary group that includes medical professionals, canine detection specialists, environmental services staff, and infection prevention and control practitioners—along with our highly trained dogs. At present, five dogs (three English Springer Spaniels and two English Cocker Spaniels) are trained to detect C. difficile, while one Labrador Retriever serves as a generalist, trained to detect a broad range of fecal pathogens.

Thank you to the Parksville Community centre for letting these highly skilled dogs and handlers train in a fun new training location organized by local Dog Trainer, Ann Gunderson and her assistant Jackie Blois. Ann Gunderson teaches privately in Parksville and Jackie runs Nose Work Classes at the Parksville Community Centre.

Pop-up Recycle Depot Report for March 21, 2026 held at 1080 Industrial Way in Parksville

17A73DFA-9091-4DAC-A9D9-557044074DC8Wow, what a treat it was to work in the sunshine once again.  Welcome back Spring!  As thankful as we all were for the sunshine, the Parksville Community Centre Society Board and Members were also most thankful for, and gratified by the amazing turnout of volunteers once again.

On March 21, 2026 we received 508 vehicles that delivered some 98 Super Sacks of recyclable material.  The landfill thanks you all.

Of course, the staff and management at #DominosPizza who deliver our lunch wanted to show their appreciation for the work we do and the support we give their establishment, so they donated the 5 large pizzas we all had the pleasure to consume.  Not only that, they also left behind a stack of coupons that we distributed to our volunteers.

Our next event will be on April 11, 2026, following which we will return to the 2-week time span until early June, when we will enjoy another three week break.  Please enjoy this break, Easter and these lovely early days of Spring.
